Surfing

Where to begin with these guys? I heard about the magazine, fell in love with it, subscribed. Then they stopped publication. Temporarily. They came back online. Only. Now they’re just about the best thing out there. Give me this, Surfer’s Journal, and a few select surfy blogs and you can keep your Surfing, Surfer, and pretty much all of that other crap.

Check out today’s images and behind-the-scenes account of this year’s Mavericks competition by Jay Watson.

Joni Sternbach

I’ve been meaning to mention Joni Sternbach for a while now. Caddie and I were at the Edward Cella gallery back in August for a friend’s reception. While there I noticed Joni Sternbach’s book for sale. I asked about it and learned she’d just shown at the gallery and that there were still some tintypes in their storage. It was really cool to see them in person.

On a side note…recognize these guys?

I have an unhealthy obsession with these boards. Lucky for them they’re soooooo far away.

I recently came across Wayne Levin’s work through Say Mayday (by way of Shakas and Singlefins). Primarily an underwater photographer, Levin captures moments in which people appear to exist naturally in an alien world. It’s in sharp contrast with the Kuroshio Sea where the piece’s subjects exist in air and water, separated by glass.

Sean & Skip on NPR

This mention is a touch overdue. Way back in September our friend Sean did a piece for NPR on Skip “Andres” Kozminski, a balsa wood surfboard shaper in Playa, Ecuador.

The Present

The PresentPhoto: Dave Homcy

Caddie has been down-for-the-count ever since she shot her short film two weeks ago. One week of the flu led to pneumonia, and that’s pretty much that for at least another week. As a result we’ve been watching a lot of TV, and generally not doing much.

Some unexpected upside happened Saturday night. I was channel surfing and saw that Thomas Campbell’s The Present was on. I missed the beginning. What I did see made me think this might be my favorite Campbell film yet. Quirky, of course, but it seems like maybe he toned down the quirk. This is a good thing. I love his style, but sometimes the odd Conquistador tangents detract from the experience. Instead of Conquistadors, The Present has Dan Malloy surfing in a coffin. Just awesome.

I kinda love this. Now if only I were more crafty…
