blue magazine

I was 22 and just done with college when I saw the cover of blue’s first issue. Well, almost. I had a few credits to finish after taking a semester off. Most of my close friends had graduated, so instead of going back to school I’d decided to finish up in Baja on a study abroad program. A month or so before leaving I was in a bookstore when I saw blue. Something resonated, and I bought it almost entirely based on the cover. How that bookstore in Maine randomly had it when so many others didn’t is beyond me. After returning from Baja I somehow convinced the people at blue to let me be one of their first two editorial interns. It was a time that shaped everything about what I think a work experience should be.

This is all coming up now because yesterday I randomly saw that five years ago blue’s premier issue had been named #20 on the American Society of Magazine Editor’s list of the “Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years.”
